Things to do in Seville

The Cathedral of Seville is one of the largest in the world, standing on the site of a former mosque. The extravagant building is heralded as one of the finest examples of gothic architecture in Europe but it is the Giralda, or bell tower, that the Cathedral is most famous for. There were several additions to the tower of the original mosque that made this tower the tallest in the world in its time.

Seville’s Alcazar is right next to the Cathedral. The Alcazar started life as a Moorish fortress but there were many additions over a five hundred year period, including palaces, gardens and courtyards built by Moorish and Christian rulers.

The Torre del Oro, or Golden Tower is a thirteenth century watchtower with a golden dome, built to protect the Alcazar from being attacked by the river.

A huge chain used to run across the river to prevent boats from passing. At different points in its history, the Golden Tower has served as a prison and a store for precious metals coming from the Spanish colonies.

Seville is a city known for its parks and gardens, of which there are in excess of twenty. Of particular note for its landscaping and monuments is the Maria Luisa Park, built in 1929, the courtyards and walled gardens of the Alcazar and the Murillo Gardens.
