Things to do in Ronda

If you are planning to explore the region with a car hire from Malaga, there are numerous Pueblo Blancos within easy reach, such as Montejaque, Benojoan, Villaluenga and Cueva de la Pileta. Perhaps the most famous of the Pueblo Blancos is Ronda, straddling a dramatic gorge with whitewashed buildings set either side of the 150 metre drop. The 18th century Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge joins the two parts of town is quite a feat of engineering. The bridge took 40 years to construct and looking down into the ravine, it is easy to see why. And, no, you cannot drive your hire car over the bridge!

Ronda is best known for its Plaza de Toros, or bullring, which is a good hundred years older than the one at Malaga dating back to 1785. Ronda is considered to be the birthplace of modern bullfighting as it was here that many innovations in the sport took place and bullfighting was first considered to be an art form rather than just a macho game. There are still bullfights in the ring at Ronda but if this rather gory sport is not for you, there is also a museum next door, which details Ronda’s history of bullfighting.

Ronda is a relatively small town but the fastest growing in Spain and it is easy to see why with its pretty white buildings and dramatic setting. On one side of the bridge is the Moorish old town with its maze of narrow cobbled streets and alleyways, now pedestrianised so if you have driven from Malaga, you’ll have to get out of your car hire. There are several impressive gardens in Ronda; go into the gardens next to the bullring for an amazing panoramic view over the wild mountains of the Serania de Ronda.

If you have a car hire, you can park in the car park by the Plaza de Tores as it is best to see Ronda on foot as in the summer the roads get very congested with traffic and the Moorish quarter is not accessible by hire car in any case.

Ronda & the Pueblo Blancos Car Rental
