Things to see and do in Marbella

One of the area’s big pull factors is the area just inland from Marbella that has been dubbed Golf Valley and the Costa del Golf for its numerous golf courses. It is popular with golfers not only for its numerous world class golf courses, of which there are at least five in the immediate area, but also because the mild climate makes it a pleasant place to play even in the winter.

There is evidence to show inhabitation of the region as far back as the Neolithic period although Marbella itself is largely a modern town, as short a time ago as the 1940s there were only 900 inhabitants.

There is a pretty old town, partially enclosed by a crumbling city wall which dates back to the Moorish occupation of Southern Spain. The shady hideaway offered by the narrow winding streets of the old town opens up onto the impressive Orange Square, once the administrative centre of Marbella.

Although Marbella itself has a pretty marina, it is certainly outclassed by the harbour at Puerto Banas, a short distance west of the town and easily reached with a car hire.

The marina at Puerto Banas has a stunning mountainous backdrop and rows of waterfront bars and restaurants with a mass of expensive yachts and pleasure boats bobbing around in the calm waters. The marina makes for a pleasant place to wile away a few hours in the day or evening.

Marbella Car Rental

Perhaps the most famous of the Costa del Sol’s resorts, Marbella is Spain’s answer to Monte Carlo; a rather salubrious resort and a well known playground for the international jet set. Marbella is in the province of Malaga, a short drive down the coast if you have a car hire.

It is not just the rich and famous who come to Marbella, but do expect to pay premium prices for mixing with them. There are numerous world class restaurants, bistros and trendy bars as far as nightlife goes. The area just inland from Marbella is littered with luxury apartments and condominiums aimed at both holiday makers and the sizable expat community in the area.
