Things to do in Granada

The Alhambra Palace is to Granada what the Taj Mahal is to Agra; an amazing complex of intricate Moorish palaces, fortresses, courtyards and gardens that narrowly missed being included in the seven wonders of the modern world. The Alhambra dates back to the Nastrid dynasty of the 14th century but he largest and most impressive of the palaces is not Moorish at all but was inserted by the most famous Emperor of the Hapsburg Empire, Charles V.

On the hill next to the Alhambra is Granada’s old town, a maze of tiny Moorish streets with whitewashed houses with walled gardens known locally as the Albaicin. Many original houses still survive, dating back some five hundred years to when the artists building the Alhambra were resident here. The narrow streets are best explored on foot, as they are not accessible to hire cars. The Calle Caldereria is a street famous for its Arabic food and teas.

Other points of interest in Granada include the tombs of Ferdinand and Isebella, who lead the crusades that finally liberated Granada from the Moorish occupiers. The Castril Palaca houses Granada’s archaeological museum. Granada also has a dramatic Cathedral.

More modern attractions include The Cube which has won numerous modern architectural awards.

Granada Car Rental

Granada is set at a natural vantage point overlooking the plain of Granada, backed by Spain’s Sierra Nevada and at the confluence of the Beiro, Genil and Daro rivers. There is a small airport in Granada and you can pick up a car hire here although many people drive from Malaga. It is also possible to pick up a car hire in the centre of the city.

The capital of Granada province, the small city of the same name is a historical melting pot of Muslim, Christian and Jewish influences. Granada was ruled by Celts, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Byzantines, Castillians and Moors and has long had a large Jewish community. If you are exploring this region of Spain, you are best off parking your car hire and doing so on foot.
