Malaga airport is currently undergoing major improvements as part of Plan Malaga, preparing the city for 2016 when Malaga will become European City of Culture. The airport has 2500 new car parking spaces and has plans for 3 new boarding gates and 9 new check-in desks. The aim is to be able to handle 50% more passengers. Already Spain’s fourth busiest airport, Malaga has connections to 120 airports around the world, including 23 in Britain.

Malaga airport is within easy driving distance of many popular destinations such as Torremolinos, Marbella, Fuengirola, Granada, Gibraltar and Seville. Situated just off of the main southern coastal road just 8km south west of the city, Malaga airport is the perfect place to pick up a car hire to get you to your chosen destination or to explore the region.

Obviously there are numerous car hire companies based at Malaga airport but it is advisable to book before you go to make sure you get a good deal on the car you want and to avoid delays upon arrival, especially in high summer. Most the car hire companies have desks on the lower floor of the airport, so just follow the signs to find the company you have booked with.

Malaga airport, officially called the Pablo Picasso Airport after Malaga’s most famous son, is the gateway to one of Europe’s most popular tourist regions, the Costa del Sol.
